Ryujinx is the strictest emulator on the Switch scene, and that reputation extends to keys: it validates the full prod.keys structure when it starts and fails loudly when something is off. That strictness is a feature — when Ryujinx reports keys loaded, they are genuinely complete.
Download prod keys for Ryujinx
The current release, v23.0.0, covers every key generation from v16.1.0 upward, so it also " "boots older titles. One file serves ryujinx and every other emulator on your machine.
Ryujinx install paths
Place the file at the location below. The filename must be exactly prod.keys — a trailing "
".txt is the most common reason an emulator reports no keys at all.
Where Ryujinx looks for prod.keys
%APPDATA%/Ryujinx/system/~/.config/Ryujinx/system/~/.config/Ryujinx/system/Installing keys in Ryujinx, step by step
- Download the current
prod.keysfrom the homepage download table. - Quit Ryujinx entirely before touching any folders.
- Place the file in the
systemdirectory for your platform — or inportable/system/if you run a portable install. - Start Ryujinx and open Options → Settings → System to confirm keys and firmware are detected.
- Watch the log window: a healthy startup prints the firmware version and no key warnings.
Errors Ryujinx prints, and what they mean
| Message | What it means | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| “Missing prod.keys” | Nothing readable in system/ — often a portable install reading a different directory. | Recheck the path, including portable/system/. |
| “Invalid key” or a crash on boot | The file is truncated, hand-edited or was saved as UTF-16. | Re-download rather than patching it. |
| “Failed to decrypt NCA” on one specific game | That title needs a newer key generation than your dump contains. | Refresh prod.keys to v23.0.0. |
| Games boot to a black screen | Keys are fine; the title is waiting on system services. | Install matching firmware via Tools → Install Firmware, then see Ryujinx firmware. |
What makes Ryujinx different
Strict validation is a diagnostic tool
Because Ryujinx checks the whole file, it is the fastest way to prove a dump is complete. If Ryujinx accepts your keys, the same file is safe to use everywhere else.
Portable mode changes everything
A folder named portable beside the Ryujinx executable makes the emulator read portable/system/ instead of AppData or ~/.config. Two installs side by side usually means one of them is in portable mode.
No Android build
Ryujinx targets Windows, macOS and Linux only. For Android, use Suyu or Eden.
How Ryujinx compares to other emulators
The same prod.keys file you use here also works in every other Switch emulator, so a clean "
"install here means the rest of your setup is ready too. Key strictness, firmware dependency and platform "
"support are compared side by side in the emulator compatibility "
"guide, and the installation guide lists every folder for "
"every emulator in one table.
