Why prod keys versions exist at all
Nintendo adds a new master key generation with each major firmware release, and newer first-party titles are " "encrypted with the newest generation available when they shipped. A dump taken on an older console cannot " "contain a generation that did not exist yet — no amount of renaming or re-saving changes that. This is the " "whole reason the download table carries twenty-two versions instead of one file.
The mechanics are covered in depth on what are prod keys; this page is " "purely about choosing a file.
Which file unlocks which game
Read the table downward: each version decrypts everything up to and including its own generation, plus every " "generation before it.

Why the newest version is almost always the answer
- It is a superset. A newer file contains every older generation, so old games keep working.
- It survives patches. Updates and DLC frequently ship encrypted with a newer generation than the base game.
- It matches current firmware. Firmware installation expects keys that cover the same generation, so pairing the newest of both avoids a mismatch.
- It ends the guessing. “Some games work, others do not” is the classic symptom of a stale dump, and the newest file removes that variable entirely.
When an older version is the right choice
Older files are still on the page for real reasons, not as filler:
- A pinned emulator build. Some archived builds and fork releases were tested against a specific generation.
- A pinned firmware image. If you deliberately run old firmware for a mod or a compatibility profile, matching keys keep the pair consistent.
- Replacing one corrupt file. If only one version misbehaves, pulling the same version again isolates whether the download or the setup is at fault.
- Reproducing a bug. Reporting an emulator issue often asks for the exact build you used.
How do you tell which generation a game needs?
The error already tells you, if you read it in the right order:
- Nothing decrypts, error arrives instantly — no readable
prod.keysat all. Fix the file and folder first. - Older games work, one newer title fails — your dump is too old for that release. Update to the newest version.
- The game decrypts, then crashes or stalls — the keys are fine and firmware is missing. See the firmware guide.
- Everything worked yesterday, one game changed — an update to that title raised its requirement. Refresh keys, then firmware.
The full symptom list lives in prod keys not working.
Should you update or keep several versions?
Keep one current file and folder it consistently. There is no benefit to stacking multiple "
"prod.keys files in the same directory — emulators read a single file named exactly "
"prod.keys, and a second copy simply gets ignored or, if it has a different name, treated as absent. "
"If you maintain several emulators or machines, copy the same current file to each; the paths are listed in the "
"install guide.
Get the right version now
For almost everyone the answer is the newest release. Take it from the " "homepage download table, drop it in the folder for your emulator, and install " "matching firmware if a game still will not boot.
